Rooted Willow Fife
Article written by: Duncan
Duncan is a willow weaver whose work is rooted in a deep respect for natural materials and the living landscapes they come from. Drawn to the quiet strength and flexibility of willow, he sees weaving not just as a craft but as a way to collaborate with nature rather than dominate it. His practice is guided by a desire to have a positive impact on the earth, using renewable, biodegradable materials and time-honoured techniques that leave a light footprint. Through his weaving, Duncan creates objects that are both functional and expressive, inviting others to reconnect with the natural world and consider more sustainable ways of living.
Rooted Willow Fife was founded in 2023 with a clear and heartfelt purpose: to run a sustainable, eco-friendly business that works in harmony with nature while supporting meaningful, practical craftsmanship. Based in Fife, the business is built around the cultivation and use of willow, a fast-growing, renewable material with a long history of traditional use.
At the heart of the business are our willow plantations. Growing our own raw material allows us to minimise environmental impact, reduce transportation emissions, and ensure full traceability from field to finished product. Willow is an ideal sustainable resource: it is a fast growing plant, it regenerates quickly after harvesting, improves soil health and supports biodiversity by providing habitats for birds, small mammals and insects.
The willow we grow is used to create a range of handcrafted items, each designed with sustainability, function, and longevity in mind.
One of our most meaningful offerings is our willow coffins. These provide an environmentally responsible alternative to conventional coffins, using natural, biodegradable materials that return gently to the earth.
In addition to coffins, Rooted Willow Fife produces a variety of home and garden items. These include practical and decorative products that celebrate traditional willow craftsmanship while fitting seamlessly into modern living. From bird feeders and plant supports to hurdles and decorative pieces such as suncatchers, hearts, stars and vases, each product is made to be durable, functional, and beautiful. Using natural finishes and avoiding harmful chemicals ensures that our products are safe for people, homes, and outdoor spaces alike.
Sustainability is not just about materials, but also about mindset. Rooted Willow Fife is committed to reducing waste and using energy efficiently. Our workshop is off grid and uses solar panels and harvested rain water. We also soak our willow in a repurposed canoe! Offcuts and surplus materials are reused wherever possible.
We run hands-on workshops where people can rediscover their creative spark and create something to take home. Feedback from our workshops has been great, with many people stating that working with natural materials in a group setting has been beneficial for their mental wellbeing as well as being fun! We hope to see you at one of our events in the future!
