Learning to Fall Safely: Judo Techniques Preventing Injuries

Article written by: Sean Doran

Falling is an inevitable part of life, whether it’s caused by a slippery surface, an unexpected trip, or even sports. While most falls are a minor nuisance, some can result in serious injuries, including broken bones, sprains or head trauma. As we age, we begin to lose flexibility, and our reactions can become slow.

What if there was a way to fall safely?

Here’s where judo comes in, the martial art that has long emphasized techniques for controlled and injury-free falls. Learning to fall using judo offers a transformative skill for everyday life.

If you (or someone you know) would like to improve your balance, (re)gain confidence and reduce your chances of injury from falls or trips, please get in touch, particularly if you are over 60 or thereabouts, reasonably fit and healthy.

It is also an opportunity to learn new skills and form a new social group. We encourage you to take an active part, enjoy the experience, and provide feedback and ideas to our coaches.

 Falling in Judo

Our Safe Falling classes at Carnegie Judo Club are not  intended to make you a judo player but allow you to learn safe falling techniques. The principles of falling safely aim to reduce the shock of impact on the body by dispersing force and protecting vulnerable areas like the head and spine.

How to Fall Matters

According to global health statistics, falls are one of the leading causes of injury-related deaths in older adults, not to mention a common source of injury for all age groups. From icy pathways to supermarket aisles, the world is full of hazards that could result in a fall.

Research has shown that falling safely programs inspired by judo can significantly reduce injury rates, increase confidence in everyday movement, and reduce the fear of falling.

How to Get Started

Our classes run on Friday mornings. No special equipment is needed. Wear comfortable clothes and exercise-appropriate trousers. If you are unsure you can do the exercises or movements, don't worry. You work at your own pace, within your own comfort zone, and progression is through micro-progressions as you gain more confidence. Our trained coaches will be with you at every step.

The classes are limited to 12 individuals and last one hour each Friday morning from 09:30 to 10:30 and for our newer groups 11:00 to 12 noon. The welcome pack and first session fully explain everything.

We run the classes in Unit 5, Lynburn Industrial Estate, Halbeath Place, Dunfermline, KY11 4JT. Just look for the FuDog / Judo club banner.
